Baker & Spice for Rosh Hashanah: crown challah, honey cake, Friday pickup

Rosh Hashanah starts Friday evening this year, which means the bread errand lands before sundown if you want challah already on the table. For Portland that map starts at Baker & Spice on SW Capitol Highway in Hillsdale, where the bakery runs a dedicated High Holidays order site separate from the everyday Square cart. We do not take the order here; their holiday checkout is the door that matters.

On that holiday board today you will find Crown Challah plain or raisin at twelve dollars, Spiced Honey Cake at twenty, a Honey Bee Bundt at thirty, Chocolate Cardamom Babka at twenty-two (that is babka on the live label, not a bundt), and a four-pack of rugelach at twelve without flavor names printed on the card, so pick the pack as written rather than a flavor we invent. Regular shop hours stay Wednesday through Saturday seven to five and Sunday seven to three, with Monday and Tuesday closed on their own site.

Pickup for this New Year window is Friday, September 11, noon to three. Order on the holiday site and choose that Friday slot in the cart so the cake and challah land in the afternoon before sundown. The same holiday site also lists Sunday, September 20, which is Yom Kippur territory and not this Journal’s job; we will cover that window separately rather than stretch one Friday cart into two holidays.

Babkush on Hawthorne still sells babka and rugelach year-round, but their Rosh Hashanah challah shows Not Available on the order page, so do not drive there for a holiday loaf that is not actually in the cart.
