Editorial policy

Hours, addresses and vegan or gluten-free claims all come from pages the shop runs itself, and you'll see where each one came from. When the hours are more than sixty days old, the page tells you to call first.

There's no cart here. You can't order, get delivery or call ahead through this site, so you buy from the shop, at the shop.

The bakery pages are built on our own visits, with no stars and nothing scraped from Yelp or Google. Every Journal visit happened in person and carries its date. A Story, when there is one, is an on-the-record conversation with a person whose name and role are printed with it.

Editorial picks are never for sale. A Featured bakery is one we'd send you to, and the bakery knows why. If someone pays for something, it's marked Paid or Supported by in the same size type as the words around it, and partners can't buy a list, a ranking or a Story.

Either someone sends us a shop or we find it ourselves. Portland shops come first, and shops elsewhere in the metro get in when they're worth the drive, filed under the city they're actually in. Add Your Bakery is a request, so sending one in doesn't guarantee a listing.

A bakery gets featured when we'd send you there and can say why in one specific line, and we tell the bakery when it happens.

A bakery comes off the site when it has closed, when it has moved and we can't verify the new address, when it stops being somewhere we'd send you, or when it carries a dietary claim we can't source. When that happens, we take it down and note it on the corrections log.

If something is wrong, write to us with what's off, and a source if you have one. You'll hear back within five business days.

Hours, prices, ownership, vegan or gluten-free status, awards and opening dates only appear here when a source backs them up. Every quote comes with a name and a role.
