Doe Donuts: strawberry-milk, vegan, sold out on purpose

A vegan Hollywood kitchen. The donuts are not gluten-free, they contain soy, and they will not sell yesterday's.

We have been driving Sandy like it was just a way to get to Hollywood, and we FINALLY stopped at 4110 Northeast Sandy for the donut this shop named itself after: doe, the house strawberry milk glaze with sprinkles, from a 100% vegan kitchen that will happily sell out and then refuse to hand you anything that is not 100% fresh! Doe Donuts + Ice Cream is a woman-owned small business. They do not print an owner name on the official pages, and they do not print an opening year, so we are not inventing either. What they DO print is the assignment: artisanal vegan donuts and ice cream, from scratch, no pre-made mixes, no tub fillings, no bucket glazes.

The year-round board is short on purpose. doe. Salted vanilla bean with fair-trade organic vanilla glaze and vanilla-bean sea salt. Portland fog — Earl Grey glaze, fresh whip, vanilla bean. Classic chocolate with fudge glaze and crispy sprinkles. Maple twist with Vermont maple. Then the breakfast plot twist sitting right there with the sweets: Sausage, Egg & Cheese, which is Just Egg, breakfast sausage, cheddar, dressed greens, red onion, and sriracha aioli, because this is a vegan kitchen and those words are the SKU names, not a secret meat locker.

August and September are a SECOND board and we treat it like a season, not a rumor. Peach cobbler fritter with local peaches, vanilla-bean glaze, and brown-sugar streusel. German chocolate cake donut with pecan coconut topping. Matcha blueberry. Mocha toffee crunch. Sweet corn cream bombolini. Buffalo bleu (they even put “it’s savory!” on the menu). Arnold Palmer. Zucchini chip cake donut. Key lime pie. If we are feeding a table, Baker’s Choice is a half dozen or a dozen and THEY pick. If we pick, it is priced each.

Ice cream is not a side quest. Year-round: birthday cake, coffee (organic maple ice cream with Jet Black Roasters), chipped mint, cookies and cream. Seasonal flavors rotate: peanut butter chunk, peaches and cream, chocolate Earl Grey, pink lemonade sorbet. Soft serve is vanilla bean. Waffle cones are traditional or chocolate sprinkle, and they have gluten-free cake cones. The donuts themselves are NOT gluten-free. One fryer. Too much flour. All of the donuts contain soy. They are not a nut-free facility. Usually a few flavors have nuts and the glaze trays get shared, so if that is your life, ask and then decide.

Hours: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Walk-in max is two dozen, twelve per flavor unless you special-order. Special orders need 48 hours, weekends book out, no tastings, no delivery, no shipping donuts, no donut towers. Unpicked orders get composted at the end of the day. They love to sell out. They do not love day-olds. You will never see them selling anything that is not 100% fresh, and that is a threat AND a promise.

We keep coming back because a lot of vegan donuts taste like a cake that got confused, and Doe is a fryer that wants you in line early. Take the doe. Take a portland fog if you already had strawberry. Take the peach cobbler fritter while August and September are still printed on the board. Then get out before “we will come back later” is how you learn they SOLD OUT on purpose!
